Buying checklist
- Steel: floor and side thickness (1/8” is a common base spec; heavier floors last longer under concrete and roofing).
- Cross-members and rails: spacing and rail design must match your hoist or trailer.
- Doors: barn-style rear door with a secure latch; cable-hook or hook-bail front to match the truck.
- Dimensions: confirm length fits your truck/trailer; most full-size 20-40 yd cans are about 22 ft long and 7.5-8 ft wide (see dumpster sizes).
- Freight: factory-pickup prices exclude delivery.
- Used cans: check floor rust-through and door hinges; a patched floor is cheaper than a new can but not by as much as it looks.
How many cans per truck?
Utilization decides it. Track rentals per can per month by size; when your 20s turn 3+ times and you are turning away jobs, buy more 20s. When 40s turn once a month, stop buying 40s. Container depreciation is small per rental (a $5,500 can over 10 years at 3 turns a month is about $15 a rental) - an idle can is the real cost. Container tracking shows utilization by size.
